4 Tips for Using an Excavator Grading Beam

Excavator grading beams are invaluable attachments for achieving smooth, level surfaces on construction sites, landscaping projects and driveway renovations. When paired with a mini excavator, they can streamline the process of levelling soil, sand, aggregate or other similar materials. But, using a grading beam effectively requires skill to ensure precision and efficiency. In this blog, we’ll share 4 tips to help you get the most out of your mini digger grading beam and achieve the professional finish you’re aiming for.

Tip 1: Keep the Attachment Level

One of the most important aspects of using a grading beam effectively is ensuring that your attachment remains level throughout the grading process. When the grading beam tilts forward or backward, the edges or fins can dig into the surface, causing gouges in the ground. These gouges lead to uneven grades, making it difficult to achieve a smooth and level surface. By keeping your excavator grading beam as parallel to the surface as possible, you can ensure a more even distribution of pressure, which results in smoother and more accurate levelling. This simple adjustment helps maintain consistent control and prevents unnecessary damage to the soil or aggregate.

Tip 2: Set Your Beam Properly

If you’re struggling to achieve a level grade, setting your digger grading beam to the desired height can make a big difference. Once you’ve set the grading beam to the appropriate level, tracking forwards and backwards across the area allows you to apply consistent pressure to level the surface. This technique is especially useful during final grading, where you’re smoothing out the top layer. It helps ensure accuracy by maintaining a steady elevation across the area. However, this method is not ideal for initial material spreading, as trying to apply the beam at this stage can cause material to back up and overflow, leading to uneven spreading and build-up.

Tip 3: Level Small Amounts at a Time

A common mistake when using a grading beam on your mini digger is trying to move too much material in a single pass. Attempting to level large amounts of material at once often leads to piling and overflowing at the top of the grading beam, which disrupts the grade and causes uneven distribution. To avoid this, focus on working in smaller, more manageable sections. By moving less material at a time, you have better control over the grading process, which helps reduce the risk of overflow and ensures more consistent levelling. This technique allows for greater precision, enabling you to tackle the grading task gradually and efficiently.

Tip 4: Apply Downwards Pressure

If your goal is to compact soil or aggregate, applying downward pressure through the grading beam can help create a denser, more stable surface. When you push down on the grading beam, it compresses the soil or aggregate, leading to a more solid and durable finish. This technique is particularly useful in final compaction after you’ve levelled the surface. However, it’s important to be careful. Applying too much or uneven pressure can result in gouging or uneven spots in the surface, which will compromise the smoothness of your grade. Therefore, it’s crucial to use controlled pressure when compacting to achieve the best results without damaging the material.
