3 Things to Look for When Comparing 20 Ton Excavator Digging Buckets

3 Things to Look for When Comparing 20 Ton Excavator Digging Buckets

"Which brand manufactures the best excavator buckets?", "Who should I buy a 20 Ton Digging Bucket from?" and "How do I make my Digging Buckets last longer?". 3 very common questions that many excavator owners or operators want to know the answers to. Choosing the right Digging Buckets for your machine can be tricky to figure out - they are all made to different specifications and with different features. We have identified 3 main things to look for when comparing 20 Ton Excavator Digging Buckets so that you can decide which bucket is right for you. Continue reading to find out more.

The 3 Most Important Things to Look for:

1. Additional Wear Protection

As you can imagine, 20 Ton Excavators are extremely powerful machines that will be used to dig through large amounts of harsh material. The bigger and more powerful the machine, the bigger and move heavy duty your buckets need to be. This obviously means that the bucket needs to be built with thick steel to withstand the force of the machine pulling through the ground. This force also means that your buckets will experience a lot of wear so we recommend purchasing Digging Buckets with additional wear protection.

20 Ton Digging Bucket - Wear Protection

Additional wear protection are sections of the bucket that have been modified from the standard design to have thicker areas of steel or specifically designed wear parts like side cutters or wear straps. For example: on Rhinox 20 Ton Digging Buckets, we manufacture them with a thicker leading edge, weld-in side cutters and wear plates. This means the areas of the side plates that wear the most are made thicker to be stronger and slower wearing. Our standard shell thickness is 10 mm with a leading edge of 25 mm and wear plate of 15 mm. Our 12 - 20 Ton Digging Buckets are fitted with cast steel CAT style teeth which means they don't have standard side cutters like smaller bucket ranges would. To ensure the bottom of the leading edge is protected, we weld in a cast steel side cutter to reduce any unnecessary wear.

As well as this, we recommend looking for Digging Buckets that have wear straps underneath the bucket. The bottom of the bucket is an area that experiences a huge amount of wear, so adding additional pieces of steel across the bottom of the bucket leads them to be worn away first before starting to wear your bucket. This considerably extends the life of your bucket, so it's a no brainer really!

2. Removable Pins

Weld-in Pins VS Bolt-in Pins

We believe that all excavator buckets and attachments should come with removable pins - especially on the larger machines! It is inevitable that over time your pins will wear during use, and using removable pins makes it much easier for you to take them out and replace them with new ones when needed. Continuing to use your buckets and attachments with worn pins will cause your Quick Hitch / Coupler (if you're using one) or the bucket links and tipping links on your excavator to wear down. Which can become a pricey job to replace in comparison to a pair of pins.

Some manufacturers weld the pins into the hanger, which is a much more difficult and time consuming job to replace when worn. You will either have to grind out the old pins and weld in new ones, or completely replace the hanger bracket depending on the state of its wear. For the larger buckets, like 20 Ton, this can be a considerably more difficult and time consuming job. Whereas, most removable pins only need a bolt or lynch pins removing to release the pin.

3. Removable Bucket Teeth

Rhinox 20 Ton Digging Bucket teeth - serrated CAT style.

As previously mentioned, 20 Ton excavator buckets experience a lot of wear and tear due to digging in harsh construction or demolition environments, like quarries and building sites. So similarly to removable pins, your bucket teeth will wear with use so you need to be able to replace them once they're worn. Worn bucket teeth become less effective at digging, making them much more difficult and time consuming to dig with. This is another feature we would recommend looking at for all size ranges, but is most cost effective on the larger machines like 20 Ton, where replacing a tooth or set of teeth is considerable cheaper than replacing an entire bucket or grinding off and welding new teeth when needed. The teeth styles that come on 20 Ton excavator buckets can vary in shape and style - for example Rhinox 20 Ton Digging Bucket teeth are a serrated CAT style. Where as, brands like Geith and Digbits have flat edged teeth.
